Another great thing about IWTV is the deconstruction of the found/chosen family trope everyone's been sick of to death by now. Turns out a family isn't automatically better just bc you "chose" or "found" it. None of the shit we've been told would've happened if these chucklefucks stayed lost and orphaned

So Lestat went to Paris to find Armand so he would give him his blood so he could heal faster after the poisoning and the fire in New Orleans Armand literally heard the story, though, this is the way to get rid of Claudia.
Planned the whole trial, imprisoned Lestat while planning everything denying him his blood and starving him until after the trial then went back to the tower that Lestat gave him and literally pushed him out of a window.
Ah, and that was after he told Lestat the other vampires had killed Louis. Okay, great, yeah, I thought I wanted to burn amc Armand, You don't even know half of the things I want to do to book Armand.

The post in question:
Tumblr media
Alright, I think we've had our fun lately with all the smut...how about we dial it back and get a LITTLE SAD!
Tumblr media
"Mama! Stop!"
That tiny little voice of his rang through the room and shook Agatha to her core. Her son was still out there; out of her grasp but clearly somewhere that existed. That plane of being with Rio. Not alive and no exactly dead. Her little boy had come through with a disconnected voice through a stupid board game made by Hasbro.
'Mama stop' was something Agatha had heard from her son many, many moons ago. Too many now that she couldn't really pinpoint the time and place. When he was still alive for sure. When he was walking through those woods with her day in and day out as they tried to survive.
'Mama stop' was the only time he really ever pleaded with her for anything. Sure, he was like all children who wanted shiny and expensive things. Wanted food and shelter and love that Agatha could give him to some degree. But what he really wanted, was for her to stop.
Stop surviving the only way she knew how. Stop surviving the only way that made her feel alive and full.
The only other people who knew about this way of being was her mother and, Rio.
The need to consume power of other witches came upon Agatha very early on in her life and maybe at a point where she was too young to fully understand the extend of her power. Taking and taking until people were no more; dried out husks and not even witches any longer. She absorbed as much as she could; too much, until she drained them completely and walked around like she had gained another life.
And she did gain another life each time; living longer and stronger and passing many milestones that would deem her too old and yet.
She was young.
Young enough to be a mother well into her human years of 70. Young enough to have her first born son under the shade of a beautiful tree beside a body of water. Young enough to plead for her sons life when Rio appeared in her beautiful and tragic green dress that meant she was there to help someone pass over.
Her son. Their son. Not even born yet Nicholas was supposed to be crossing over into the next life and Agatha wouldn't have it.
She knew she had to fight tooth and nail for herself but for her son? Their son? A son born of a witch and Death itself was something special, something to be saved and coveted and it pained Agatha to know that Rio didn't see it that way.
His death was a natural event; meant to be in the cosmic balance of the universe.
Agatha couldn't and wouldn't allow the cosmos and the balance to have what wasn't theirs.
And when that little boy of hers grew and grew and fed from her; the power of other witches, he was always sick. She couldn't understand it; believed that her son would crave the sort of power she did. Taking and taking until groups of women were left dead in the woods and she, powerful than ever, still had a crying baby boy tied tight to her breast.
Her mother, she knew, would have told her she was a terrible mother. Harming this little baby boy under her prowess; under her desire to be satiated by someone else's magic. She didn't really need food to keep herself going; could by-pass it if necessary but, Agatha quickly came to learn, her son was different.
Maybe that was what Rio had contributed to making him. More human in the sense; more a child of living and dying. She could not provide for her son in the ways she understood but that didn't mean she didn't try. She'd become a beggar of food until he could walk and talk and then, she instructed him to use his charm to get what he wanted.
"Use that smart brain and adorable little face of yours, Nicky. Women will give you whatever you ask of them since you're just a sweet little boy."
And they would. They would fall for his charms and his smarts and give whatever food they could. They'd give and give and Nicky was scared to take. Was she a bad mother for that? Or, was she teaching him the art of survival?
Maybe, that had all changed when she instructed him differently at one point in his life.
"Use that smart brain and adorable little face of yours, Nicky. If you see the opportunity, take it. Take what should be yours and let those women chase you back to me...they will, because they'll see a sweet little boy and wonder how someone like you could steal from them?"
And it worked. Each and every time. Those poor young and old witches would fall into Nicholas' trap and follow the boy to Agatha. Before they knew it, they were drained of their power among having their food and goods stolen right before by Nicholas' young hand.
Agatha hated how natural Nicky was at this; scheming and stealing and using his wits and charm to lure women. He was her son, no doubt. Did Rio approve of this? Did she disapprove? Was she allowing all of this to continue on and on because she knew, at the end of the day, she would come to take Nicky home?
She had to understand, Rio did, because she knew where and how Agatha had grown up as a young girl. Had been there since day one when her mother contemplated killing her after her birth. Rio lingered in the shadows of the baby girl and watched over her closely until Evanora decided against the killing of her own child. She would have some purpose to her, even if it was nothing more than being a maid or servant to her and her coven.
Life was never kind to Agatha Harkness but Death was.
After the death of her coven, Agatha was never truly alone. Rio followed her everywhere she went as she continued to train and explore her powers. She killed almost anything and everyone in sight; scared of men taking advantage of a young girl and, scared of women who may be witches trying to defend Evanora's murder. She killed left and right and never thought anything of it. She was surviving. She was capable. Rio cleaned up after Agatha and silently thanked the young woman for all these souls she had to reap.
So many souls, Rio lost count in those early years.
Agatha kept her full and in return?
Rio turned her grace towards Agatha and made her feel like she wasn't alone in her need to survive.
A more human form; gentle and sweet and understanding, Rio became someone that Agatha trusted with her life and then some.
Souls for love and love for souls.
Rio understood that Agatha was flighty and lied and manipulated people and situations to suit her needs. Maybe, she was selfish at best in her need to survive. But Rio, could not hold that against her soon-to-become lover.
Agatha's desire to live was greater than her desire to die. Even when, she coupled and went to bed with Death itself.
That was were Rio found it possible to waive for their sons life for just a little big longer; even if it meant he would die of sickness. His body too frail and too weak to contain the multitudes of power Agatha fed him and maybe even, the heavy burden of being born from Death itself.
If Rio knew anything, it would be that her and Agatha's son would be safe in Agatha's care. That woman, that witch, would never hurt their son the way she had been hurt. Evanora's scorn and displeasure; her wish to have killed Agatha at birth did not pass down to Nicholas.
Agatha held him higher than herself and even, without a doubt in Rio's mind, her.
Nicholas was higher than Death itself.
But, that little boy was smart and knew that after his passing, Agatha didn't need to kill all those witches to survive. She had more than enough to survive comfortably. This hunger that gnawed inside of her was the result of severe loss. Her mother dead, her son dead, her hatred for her wife was strong and blinding. Alone in the world once more drove her to merciless killing sprees that both Rio and Nicky took note of.
"Mama's killing witches again."
And all Rio could do was nod her crowned head solemnly at their son. Wise beyond his years; all he wanted was for his mother to stop. Stop and, eventually come home to them.
"Mama! Stop!"
From beyond the grave in Rio's realm made Agatha run from the trial and from leaving Alice in cold blood. The power that surged inside of her felt good for all of two seconds until she realized, as she watched her fingers, that power fizzled out into nothingness.
Nothing that could fill the hunger but also, nothing that would stop her from trying again and again. The desire to be stronger, better, more powerful than any other witch that ever was was a bigger, louder, roaring voice than the little one of her son pleading her to stop.
She didn't stop; couldn't stop because of him. Because of her son, their son.
Her failures needed to be atoned for; unable to keep her son alive and her relationship flourishing, the solution was to keep herself afloat.
Bodies and souls would pile up and Rio, always Rio, would be there to pick up the pieces after Agatha's mess.

also in the same way you have to see armand choosing the coven over louis as him deciding between two options he sees as bad, believing one is not viable, and committing to the other wholeheartedly (hence him directing the trial and just generally playing an active role in madeleine claudia and louis's executions) so too must you view his decision to stay with louis after the trial as him realising the coven is not a viable option for him anymore (because louis kills them all) and committing to louis wholeheartedly instead because he's his only other option.

SPOILERS FOR ALIEN ROMULUS
no seriously like spoilers for the ending not just a bit in the middle
It's just a funny (hilarious) bit of foreshadowing but still spoilers
I'm driving home from watching this movie with my mother, and we're both just yapping about how we liked it, and I was suddenly reminded of what I noticed about Isabela Merced's character Kay!
Early on in the movie, we get a shot of her in bed after she tells Rain that she's pregnant, with a flat oval necklace clearly displayed.
This isn't the exact scene, but example:
Tumblr media
you can kinda see the necklace once you zoom in
Tumblr media
This medal is easily identifiable even from the distance/lack of detail thanks to Catholic guilt! yay! This is a Miraculous Medal (pictured below)
Tumblr media
This is a necklace that centers Mary with a whole bunch of lore attached that details how St. Catherine Labouré saw Mary in a vision (twice technically) and the second time was instructed to
“Have a medal struck upon this model. Those who wear it will receive great graces, especially if they wear it around the neck. Those who repeat this prayer with devotion will be, in a special manner, under the protection of the Mother of God. Graces will be abundantly bestowed upon those who have confidence.”
tldr: it's a very common and recognizable representation of Mary, they often have these medals at catholic churches as back when I worked at mine they were literally just sitting in the lobby.
What made me laugh so profusely in my car ride home is that Mary is considered literally THE mother in Christan lore and Kay does in fact give birth at the end of the movie... to what is essentially Weyland-Yutani Jesus.
Technically she took David's goo injection and produced the 'Offspring' (apparently what the horrifying human/xenomorph is called) (I prefer W-Y Jesus)
This is a wonderful bit of foreshadowing for the ending sequence, coupled with the engraving of Romulus and Remus and the Capitoline wolf, as well as the painting that was zoomed in on right before of a mother and child. And kinda as well to the whole thing about Weyland-Yutani trying to 'play God' with humanity's evolution.
But, on a larger more franchise-wide scale, this foreshadowing continues on with some of the themes from the previous two movies concerning origins and beginnings, as the whole Mary/Jesus thing is technically speaking, the 'origin/beginning' part of the New Testament. This is shown very plainly in the titles (Prometheus, Covenant, Romulus) which are all pulled from various origin stories - Greek, Abrahamic, and Roman. Prometheus stole fire, the covenants in the Torah/Pentateuch, and the founding of Rome. All different stories about the growth of humanity, ranging from how to live all the way up to founding empires. These ideas somewhat parallel the actual events of the movies.
B/c we watch David - and therefore Weyland-Yutani - discover the goo, experiment on it, learn how to interact with it, and then attempt to build a new empire with it.
It's a very messy analogy and kinda? does not fit with the Mary thing in Romulus, but in very broad strokes it ties in well enough, which for the whole confusing Prometheus/Covenant situation is par for the course.
Overall, Alien: Romulus is an amazing addition to the franchise and at the risk of sounding cheesy is literally a breath of fresh air. Right down to the pacing of the movie, it's classic Alien. I loved it, and even if you haven't seen any of the alien movies or even if you've only seen the first, and even if you have these spoilers, it's a fantastic experience!
(and for all the alien: isolation lovers there's such a cute nod to the game in the movie)
